Our Mission
To preserve, enhance, and promote St. Louis’ architectural heritage and to encourage sound planning and good contemporary design.
The History of Landmarks Association
Founded in 1958 and incorporated in 1959, Landmarks Association of St. Louis emerged in response to the growing loss of the city’s architectural heritage.
From its early victories saving sites like the Bissell Mansion and the Wainwright Building, Landmarks quickly became a leading voice for preservation. A citywide survey launched in the 1970s laid the groundwork for future efforts, aligning preservation with policy and planning.

How We Work by Our Mission
At Landmarks Association, we advance our mission to preserve, enhance, and promote St. Louis’ architectural heritage through direct action, community engagement, and strategic collaboration. Our work reaches a wide range of audiences and partners, with programs that educate, inspire, and support preservation efforts across the city.
Engage the Public
From hands-on workshops to educational tours and art-driven advocacy, we host events that bring people closer to the built environment. In the past year alone, we offered 138 programs.
Collaborate for Policy Impact
We work across sectors to ensure that preservation and thoughtful urban development are integrated into the decision-making process at every level—from downtown redevelopment to neighborhood revitalization.
Support
Through Funding
We’re growing financial tools to better support individuals and organizations taking on challenging but essential historic rehabilitation projects, helping turn vision into reality.
OUR IMPACT
Why Preservation Matters
Historic preservation fuels economic reinvestment and cultural identity. Thanks in part to Landmarks’ efforts, St. Louis has benefited from over $1.5 billion in revitalization projects, turning potential demolition sites into vibrant places like the Drury Plaza Hotel and the Westin.
Through community engagement and public education, Landmarks ensures that the city’s unique architectural legacy continues to inspire and serve future generations.
