The St. Louis Public School District announced on Wednesdy, May 4th, 2011 that it had listed more surplus property on the real estate market. In addition to other schools previously listed, Layafette Elementary, Gardenville School and Shepard Elementary are now for sale. A majority of the schools for sale were designed by William B. Ittner, who designed fifty school in the St. Louis area with plans that featured an open concept and natural lighting. The district’s buildigs have emptied as the student population has fallen from its peak of 115,543 in 1967 to roughly 24,000 in 2010. Due to the population drop, 43 of the district’s 111 school buildings have been vacated. While vacant, several schools have suffured from vandalism and looting costing the school district millions of dollars in damages.
