About the Deco Fortress
Constructed in 1941 as a pharmacy, the 12,000 SQ building has seen many iterations (Elk’s lodge, blues bar, BBQ joint to name a few) before the current owners purchased and renovated the building into their private residence. Terra cotta adorns the exterior along with blond brick. Among the building's interior features include Art Deco tile work, decorative crown moldings, gilded iron railings, and a 22-foot bar with a Marlite top. The owners also collect American industrial design and Art Deco ceramics.
About Art Deco
The style was originated in France and came to the United States in the 1920’s. Geometric shapes, zig zag patterns, neon lights, and vibrant colors are elements of the Art Deco style. Its popularity peaked in the 1930’s as many projects by the Public Works Administration used the style in the government buildings, bridges, and dams of that era. New York City’s Empire States Building and Chrysler Buildings are two the country's best examples of Art Deco architecture.
