DESCRIPTION:  \nLecturer: Benjamin Looker\, SLU faculty member in American Studies \nDate: Wednesday\, Sept. 30th\, 2026 @ 6:00 PM \nLocation: Landmarks Office\, 1805 S. 9th Street\, Saint Louis\, MO 63104 \nSt. Louis of the late 1960s was high on the list of America’s most racially segregated cities\, even as it attracted widespread rebuke for the catastrophic disrepair at its Pruitt-Igoe housing complex. Paradoxically\, the city at this same moment possessed one of the decade’s most lauded “experiments in integration”: the Midtown housing development known as LaClede Town. Characterized by its interracial resident base\, LaClede Town became a seedbed for countercultural and activist social projects. How did this freshly built neighborhood achieve this identity? Whose ends did its glowing national reputation serve? What happened to the site after its heyday? Join us for an exploration of how race\, redevelopment\, and culture intersected in an iconic St. Louis neighborhood. \nBenjamin Looker is an award-winning researcher who writes on topics including U.S. urban history\, jazz and theatre\, and 20th-century social movements. Ittner schools that exist in the city of St. Louis and beyond.  Her exhibit of photography and background stories of Mr. Ittner’s years as school architect add depth and personal examples to the legacy many of us are already familiar with today.  She will itemize his thoughtful ideas that led to enormous feats in school construction one hundred thirty years ago and highlight the beautiful buildings that resulted from these innovations\, leaving us with many structures still standing and beloved memories\, all these decades later. \nBio: Carolyn K. Green is a partner with BRS Architects\, LLP in St. Louis and has long been a follower of the Wm. B. Ittner collection of school buildings. She was employed as an architect for the firm of Wm. B. The lecture will examine some early building types in St. Louis; where they were\, where they are\, and where they might still be found. The discussion will also provide broad historical context about the physical growth of the City and how development pressures\, both positive and negative\, have impacted where our oldest vernacular buildings survive. \nAndrew Weil is the former Executive Director of the Landmarks Association of St. Louis\, where he dedicated nearly 20 years to historic preservation. The talk will look at buildings and architects from 1840 through the early 20th century.  Included in the talk will be better known architects\, like Edmund Jungenfeld\, Otto Wilhelmi\, and Ernst C. Janssen\, as well as lesser known architects\, like Henry E.
