Landmarks Members Tour Former Monticello Female Seminary

| by Michael R. Allen, Former Assistant Director

March 17, 2008

On Saturday, March 8, Landmarks members braved erratic weather to tour the former Monticello Female Seminary (now Lewis and Clark Community College) in Godfrey, Illinois.  Landmarks' board member Gary Tetley organized the tour, while Linda Nevlin, Executive Director of the Monticello College Foundation, provided a historical overview and guided the walking tour of the campus. After assembling in the Godfrey Memorial Chapel, the group moved on to the core buildings of Monticello.  Theodore Link's stunning Romanesque Revival Caldwell Hall was the centerpiece.  The Reid Memorial Library, with its high vaulted ceiling and exposed carved wooden trusswork, was a highlight of the day.  The tour concluded with an elegant coffee service at the Evergreens, the restored Italianate house that once served as the on-campus residence of the various seminary directors.
